Which foods cause eczema anyway? Does it even matter what you eat? There are many who believe that what you put in your mouth has no effect on your eczema, but I strongly disagree.
It’s hard to imagine that one of your favorite foods could be causing your skin problems, but that may often be the case. This is especially true if you eat a lot of processed and unhealthy foods, but could also apply for healthier foods.
It is believed that eczema is one of the most common symptoms of food sensitivity, according to Foodintol.com. So if you’re asking yourself “which foods cause eczema?”, you may want to take a closer look in your fridge and cupboard.
Foods that most commonly cause problems are casein (from milk), gluten, and sugar.
What Foods to Avoid
Believe it or not, many people have food allergies without even knowing it. My boyfriend has trouble with eczema from time to time, and if he eats unhealthy foods, it gets worse.
If your body can’t tolerate the milk protein casein, then you should avoid anything with milk in it, such as:
- Ice cream
- Milk chocolate
- Any milk or dairy products
I know it can be hard to give up ice cream and chocolate, but if you want to get better skin, there are great alternatives out there which will satisfy your appetite.
Let’s take a look at gluten, which is a very common culprit not only in causing eczema, but many other problems. Here are some foods that contain gluten:

As for sugar, I don’t think we have to go through foods that contain sugar, because you probably already know.
But what I do want to say is that there are differences between fruit sugar and refined sugar. If you eat fruits, that’s okay, but stay away from candies, cookies, and so on.
The Elimination Method
The best way to figure out which foods cause eczema for you is to use an elimination diet, which means eliminating everything that could be causing your skin problems.
Foods that you should eliminate are, for example: yogurt, milk, ice cream, soy, coffee, tea, chocolate, cereals, cookies, cakes, pizza, wine, beer, spirits, processed foods, sugary foods, fast food, fish, seafood, and spicy foods.
I think you get the gist of it. However, there are still plenty you can eat on this diet, such as healthy, lean cuts of meat, vegetables, and smaller amounts of fruit.
You should stay on this diet for 2-3 weeks if you want to discover which foods cause eczema for you. If you see improvements during this time, you can slowly start adding in your favorite foods, but do it one by one, so you can see how you react.
I also recommend you moisturize your skin day and night, as this can often help eczema, as it did for my boyfriend.
