What is Eczema? Discover the Real Causes of Eczema (And How to Cure It)

by Henri

Anyone who suffers from eczema understands how painful and uncomfortable it can be when it flares up.  The itching is more than uncomfortable and the other symptoms can be as hard to handle.  Your skin becomes dry and inflamed and a rash can occur in extreme cases.

What causes eczema anyway? There is no single cause for this condition as there are many contributing factors that can lead to it and some can suffer from one or more of them.

The following are some of the common causes of eczema:

1. Genetics – The chances of a child who is born of one or both parents who suffer from eczema getting it are quite high.  This condition is more common in children although adults do suffer from it.  Any adult who suffered from it as a child needs to watch their children carefully as the odds are they can get it as well.

2. Immune System – It is common for people who have weakened immune systems to also suffer from eczema.  This is another reason why babies and small children who do not have the immunities that adults have get it so often.

3. Stress – Stress is a common factor for an outbreak of eczema.  When a person who already has had one outbreak becomes stressed, the body triggers a release of the toxins in the body that cannot be processed quickly enough through the body so it secretes through the skin that causes the itching and rash.

4. Changes in Temperature – You know how your body changes when you go into a climate that your body is not used to.  For instance, if you live in a place with dry air then head to a humid and hotter tropical climate, your body reacts. For example, my skin doesn’t need moisturizers if I’m near the equator, but if I’m up north, I need to keep a close eye on my skin.

5. Cleansers – There are many chemicals to be found in cleansers and these can be disastrous if you are suffering from eczema.  Using hypoallergenic cleaners and body washes can easily keep this from happening, so beware of what you put on your skin.

6. Smells – Smells are known to bring up memories for people and they can also trigger allergies and eczema as well.  You may have noticed an outbreak when you are around someone who is wearing a heavy perfume or deodorant. This is usually because of the chemicals taken in through your nose, mouth, and skin.

7. Mold – In damp climates, mold is a problem and it can also cause outbreaks of eczema.  Even healthy people have adverse reactions to certain molds and there are types that are lethal.  It is important to keep the home dry and free of mold.

8. Food - In many cases, the food you can affect how your body looks, reacts, and feels. Start eliminating grains, dairy, processed foods, and sugars. You know, the bad stuff. It’s not easy, but then again, would you rather eat healthier and get better skin or the other way around?

While the above list may seem quite long, the good news is that there are many natural home remedies for eczema that can be used to alleviate outbreaks.

In some cases, simply changing your lifestyle and learning which foods cause eczema can help you or your children to reduce outbreaks.  Coconut oil and swimming in salt water are just two home remedies that can help alleviate the discomfort.

You don’t have to suffer from eczema when there are so many great natural treatments out there.
