Living with rosacea can be difficult and the red, irritated skin can be embarrassing. There is no cure for this condition but there are treatments and lifestyle changes that can be made to reduce the symptoms and make life with rosacea easier. One way to keep it under control is by identifying triggers that make the condition worse.
Each individual will be affected by a different set of rosacea triggers so the key is learning which ones affect you the most. Once you have this information you can make some lifestyle changes to eliminate some of the things that aggravate your condition.
Here is a list of some of the most common rosacea triggers that could be affecting you:
Stress- This is a common trigger that affects most everyone. If there is a lot of stress in your life, look for ways to relax and relieve some of the pressure. Find a hobby, practice yoga or go fishing once in awhile, whatever relieves the stress in your life.
Certain Foods- Spicy foods, sugar, citrus fruits, shellfish, tomatoes, lobster, raisins and chocolate are but a few of the foods that can cause rosacea to flare up so, pay close attention to what you eat.
Beverages- There are a number of beverages that can trigger rosacea. A few of these include alcohol, coffee, tea and sodas. If you use your common sense, you will be fine. Stick to the natural stuff!
Dehydration- Staying hydrated is vital if you want to avoid setting off this condition so drink plenty of water, and make sure it is pure, because your tap water cannot always be trusted.
Hot Baths- Taking cool or warm baths is recommended because the heat and steam from hot baths and showers can make rosacea worse, but you will have to experiment and see how it affects your body.
Astringents- Any astringent that shrinks the pores and trap body oils in the skin can be a rosacea trigger, but again, I recommend you put on your researcher hat and try it for yourself.
Medications- You’ll find that there are a number of medications that can trigger rosacea. If you’re taking something that’s making your condition worse, discuss it with your physician. There may be a substitute he can prescribe.
Overweight- Being overweight can make the cardiovascular system work harder which increases vascular dilation, redness and facial blushing associated with rosacea.
Sunlight- The sun can tighten and clog the skin pores resulting in an outbreak. However, I personally believe that the sun is crucial in our well-being, so try to get at least some sun everyday.
You can determine what rosacea triggers affect you by paying close attention and monitoring when you have an outbreak. Once you learn which rosacea triggers make your condition worse, you can make the necessary changes to reduce the symptoms to help keep your skin fresh and clean looking.
